I wish I could’ve told the younger me to love my indigenous features. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The ones that isolated me from my peers. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The ones that I never saw represented in magazines or tv shows. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The ones that my ancestors gave me. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I wanted to change myself for so many years. Years of coloring my hair and making it lighter. Years of applying makeup in a way that would alter or cover up the features I didn’t like- the features that have been passed down since time immemorial. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I am finally and unapologetically me. Indigenous me. Philámayaye tȟuŋkášila for making me Lakȟóta
A note about visiting sovereign tribal land: it is a privilege to be able to visit. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ No one is entitled to this land except the indigenous nation to whom it belongs. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It is truly the most magical place I have visited, and I’m so thankful to have had the opportunity last October. I hope those of you who received permits this year have an amazing, memorable time. But please remember this ⬆️. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I also recommend reading “I am the Grand Canyon” by Stephen Hirst before your trip to respectfully educate yourselves on the government inflicted hardships the Havsuw Baaj have endured and the beautiful culture that prevails.
